Formalism and Realism in the Movie Hero

Movie: Hero Director: Zhang Yimou Cast : Jet Li, Tony Leung Chiu Wai and Maggie Cheung Year of production: 2002 Country of production: China Language: Mandarin Film synopsis: The Qin King was obsessed with conquering all of China and becoming the first Emperor. He had been the target of assassins throughout the other states. Among them none inspired as much fear as the three legendary assassins, Broken Sword, Flying Snow and Sky. To anyone who defeated the three assassins, the King of Qin promised great power, mountains of gold and a private audience with the King himself. Following this Nameless came to the palace bearing the legendary weapons of the slain assassins, sitting in the palace, and told his extraordinary tale. Journal question: How does the colour cinematography of Hero (Zhang Yimou, 2002) contribute to formalism? â€Å"In art theory, formalism is the concept that a work’s artistic value is entirely determined by its form—the way it is made, its purely visual aspects, and its medium. Formalism emphasizes compositional elements such as color, line, shape and texture rather than realism, context, and content. . In Hero, Zhang Yimou combines cinematography with mise en scene to bring his own vision of the story, particularly with the use of certain colours. There are a total of five colours in this movie which choosed to express different versions or point of views ; black, white, red, blue, and green. Zhang Yimou uses the four colours, Red, Green, Blue and White, to tie in four different segments of the story. On the other han d, each of them also contains a different story The King of Qin’s palace is black, enlivened only by splashes of red. This forms the beginning and the end of the story and the overall feel of this sequence extends into the first fight between Nameless and Sky. The chosen colour metaphorically represents the battle between good and evil. Red dominates the first version of the story by Nameless in which he describes the calligraphy school, the attack by the Qin army, the stabbing of Broken Sword and the subsequent fight between Flying Snow and Moon. The color of red brings emotion, such as love, anger, passion nd romance. It portrays the tension between lovers and their passion for revenge to the King Qin. The costumes of the characters are in red, as well as the props. The red is a Kodak red as said by the film’s cinematographer. It's a much more saturated solid red. Blue becomes the colour for the second version of the story by the King himself. During the part of the story telled by the King, it evolved some fighting sequence in a lake. Since the colour of water is blue, so this section of story surrounded by blue colour with costumes and props and also location as well as the lake. Blue also represents peace, calmness and detachment. The colour suits the King as he shows peace in discovering Nameless true plan, which is to kill the King. The story version of the king surrounded with blue colour as well. Green is the colour for the story that Nameless doesn’t necessarily know since it covers the first meeting of Broken Sword and Flying Snow and also the failed assassination attempt. Since green colour known for memories and knowledge, it used to portray the flashback scene which evolve broken sword and flying snow. Broken Sword believes that the King of Qin has the power to unite these kingdoms for the greater good of the future. White is the final colour, dominating the deaths of Flying Snow and Broken Sword and alternating with the black sequences back in the palace. this scene is achieved through mise en scene, cinematography and post-production. The characters wear white and the props are in white colour. The lighting is over exposed to highlight the white colour . The scene reflects truth of the characters’ intentions. FPRIVATE â€Å"TYPE=PICT;ALT=AP†[-2] Reuters By SETH BORENSTEIN, AP Science Writer Seth Borenstein, Ap Science Writer – Wed Sep 29, 7:19 pm ET WASHINGTON – Astronomers say they have for the first time spotted a planet beyond our own in what is sometimes called the Goldilocks zone for life: Not too hot, not too cold. Juuuust right. Not too far from its star, not too close. So it could contain liquid water. The planet itself is neither too big nor too small for the proper surface, gravity and atmosphere. It’s just right. Just like Earth. This really is the first Goldilocks planet,† said co-discoverer R. Paul Butler of the Carnegie Institution of Washington. [Related: Seven best places to sleep under the stars[-3]] The new planet sits smack in the middle of what astronomers refer to as the habitable zone, unlike any of the nearly 500 other planets astronomers have found outside our solar system. And it is in our galactic neighborhood, suggesting that pl enty of Earth-like planets circle other stars. Finding a planet that could potentially support life is a major step toward answering the timeless question: Are we alone? Scientists have jumped the gun before on proclaiming that planets outside our solar system were habitable only to have them turn out to be not quite so conducive to life. But this one is so clearly in the right zone that five outside astronomers told The Associated Press it seems to be the real thing. â€Å"This is the first one I’m truly excited about,† said Penn State University’s Jim Kasting. He said this planet is a â€Å"pretty prime candidate† for harboring life. Life on other planets doesn’t mean E. T. Even a simple single-cell bacteria or the equivalent of shower mold would shake perceptions about the uniqueness of life on Earth. But there are still many unanswered questions about this strange planet. It is about three times the mass of Earth, slightly larger in width and much closer to its star — 14 million miles away versus 93 million. It’s so close to its version of the sun that it orbits every 37 days. And it doesn’t rotate much, so one side is almost always bright, the other dark. Temperatures can be as hot as 160 degrees or as frigid as 25 degrees below zero, but in between — in the land of constant sunrise — it would be â€Å"shirt-sleeve weather,† said co-discoverer Steven Vogt of the University of California at Santa Cruz. It’s unknown whether water actually exists on the planet, and what kind of atmosphere it has. But because conditions are ideal for liquid water, and because there always seems to be life on Earth where there is water, Vogt believes â€Å"that chances for life on this planet are 100 percent. † The astronomers’ findings are being published in Astrophysical Journal and were announced by the National Science Foundation on Wednesday. The planet circles a star called Gliese 581. It’s about 120 trillion miles away, so it would take several generations for a spaceship to get there. It may seem like a long distance, but in the scheme of the vast universe, this planet is â€Å"like right in our face, right next door to us,† Vogt said in an interview. That close proximity and the way it was found so early in astronomers’ search for habitable planets hints to scientists that planets like Earth are probably not that rare. Career Oportunities Essay Example For Students

Career Oportunities Essay Being in a Business Management program has provided me with many carrer oportunities. Whether it is running the family business or managing a multinational firm. This is all made possible by the education which I have received here at Thomas College. I knew that in order to be ready for the workplace I needed to go to college. I hoped that this would provide me with the knowledge I needed to start working at a good salary and to be doing something that I enjoyed. The education has indeed provided me with the nessessary knowledge to be a very competitive member of the workforce. Where I am working (OConnors GMC), has many employees that have been there much longer than I have. However, I have been offered a starting salary that is greater than what they are earning now. This is because I have been to college and in many cases know more about how to run a division than they do. These are just a few of the vast possibilities out there for me. SALES MANAGERS design and measure marketing and distribution strategies. They are the driving force behind the sales strategies. Their work includes the supervision of sales staff and the development of sales programs designed to introduce prospective customers to new products and services. Sales managers are also responsible for reviewing market trends and evaluating sales. Sales management may include the selection and training of the sales staff and the development of a network of dealers who sell a product in the field.(1) MORTGAGE LOAN OFFICERS deal with prospective home owners. These are people who do or want to own their own homes. Appraisers carefully examine every detail of the building plans and site details. When a firm or business is the borrower, loan officers keep in mind the profit potential of the project. This may help them determine if the loan should go through. The bottom line that they are worried about is wheather the borrower will be able to make the payments. CREDIT ANALYSTS deal with commercial loans to business and industry. They do credit checks on the business owners themselves, the trends in the industry which they want to venture, the projected future of the company to see if they will be able to pay back their loans, and the potential for growth in the industry. They look at business methods and operations to see if the business is solidly run and looks promising. To get facts, they talk with banks and other lenders who may have lent money to the loan applicant. They also read and analyze financial statements and compare past and current statements to learn whether the business is sound. If the loan is approved, they may assist with the preparation of the loan notes and other documents.(5) CREDIT MANAGERS have the final authority to accept or reject any and all credit applications. Before extending credit to businesses, the credit manager reviews detailed financial reports, interviews a representative of the firm, and reviews credi t agency reports to see the firms record for paying back its debts. If they are new and have none they then look to see what the owners credit history looks like. They are the ones who make the last call on whether a company receives the requested monies or not. They want to make sure the company has strong financial capeabilities to be able to withstand bad times. They do not want the loan to become unpaid or delinquint.
